What Are Your HEART Goals? Part 1

Toward the end of 2021, as I began considering goals and plans for the new year, inspiration struck. You see, I have never really enjoyed the methodical, analytical process of goal setting - especially trying to create SMART goals. As a creative soul, SMART goals are just too antiseptic for me.

As I was thinking about the year I wanted to create in 2022, as Elizabeth Gilbert would say, a magical idea visited me and I decided to say yes to it. So, HEART goals were born. Of course, HEART in this case is an acronym, which stands for:

H - Holistic
E - Empowering
A - Affirming
R - Relational
T - Transformational

HEART goals are both personal and relational. I’ll explore each of the pieces of HEART goals this week, but let’s start with Holistic.

HEART goals are grounded in your personal values. Therefore, before you can begin setting HEART goals, it’s important to assess your values and determine:

  • What you need more or less of to feel that your values-centered life is complete or balanced.

  • What is missing to cultivate a balanced, values-centered life.

If you need help getting started, I recommend completing the free Barrett Values Centre Personal Values Assessment. I am not affiliated with the Barrett Values Centre and do not receive any compensation for sharing their assessment. The Barrett Model, based on the work of Richard Barrett, shows how we evolve from being focused only on our own self-interest to expressing our purpose and finding our meaning through the common good. It aligns nicely with HEART goals, because of its relational nature.

If you take the assessment and are interested in talking through your results in context with goal setting, let me know.
